man thinking about the cloud migration

4 signs it’s time for a cloud migration

December 13, 2018/in blog/by multipage

More and more small businesses are using cloud solutions to meet technology needs. Today, about 92 percent of all SMBs use at least one cloud solution as part of their IT strategies. Migrating some or all your critical server infrastructure to the cloud is a big decision. Here are four signs it might be time.

Your hardware is overdue to be replaced

On average, a server’s lifespan ranges between three and five years. But, this time frame can expand with proper maintenance and regular upgrades. If your servers are more than five years old, there’s a good chance that they are in need of replacement. If they’re approaching 10 years of age, it’s almost overdue to replace them. Outdated hardware increases maintenance costs and exposes you to greater data security threats. Buying and owning in-house servers can be expensive. Migrating to the cloud is a more affordable option.

Your company is outgrowing its current capabilities

If your business is growing fast, you will exceed the capacity of your current solutions soon. This will mean that you will either have to buy more server infrastructure or migrate to the cloud. The ability to scale up when needed is one of the largest advantages of cloud computing. This will allow you to use more of the server capacity of your IT service provider instead of buying and installing new servers.

Your IT costs are running too high

All small businesses need to make the most of their IT budgets. Small businesses spend an average of 6.9 percent of their total revenue on IT. Midsize companies spend about 4.1 percent. If your costs are higher, you might be overspending on IT and minimizing company profits. Migrating your systems to the cloud can be a good way to reduce expenses on your technology assets.

You want to consolidate existing systems

When it comes to consolidating IT systems, cloud solutions can be helpful by eliminating redundancies in old systems. It can also help to create a more streamlined process for managing the various technology needs of your business. With the cloud, your company can save time and reduce its IT management burden.

If you recognize one or more of these four signs, it may be time to think about migrating your IT systems to the cloud. Consider talking to a managed services provider to find out whether a cloud solution is a good fit for your company. You should also ask for input from your in-house IT staff members. They will be able to give you good insight into the pros and cons of a cloud migration for your unique business.
